HOW TO TREAT OR AVOID DIABETES IN CHILDREN AND ADULT

                          Diabetes is the most rapidly growing chronic disease of our time and Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar; in fact there is no such thing as "having a touch of sugar," as some people believe.Only a doctor or health care provider can diagnose diabetes either by conducting a  fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).
                          Diabetes is the leading cause of new blindness, kidney disease, and amputation, and it contributes greatly to the state's and nation's number one killer,  cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke) .People with diabetes are more likely to die from flu or pneumonia,it is a disease in which the body does not make any insulin or can't use the insulin it does make as well as it should.
Our bodies break down the foods we eat into glucose and other nutrients needed to fuel bodily functions, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract. The  glucose level  in the blood rises after a meal and triggers the  pancreas  to make the hormone  insulin  and release it into the bloodstream. But in people with diabetes, the body either can't make or respond to insulin properly.
                      The two types of diabetes are  type 1  and  type 2 and Both cause blood sugar levels to become higher than normal but do so in different ways,Type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent diabetes) is different,Unlike someone with type 1 diabetes, a person with type 2 diabetes still produces insulin but the body doesn't respond to it normally, glucose is less able to enter the cells and do its job of supplying energy (this is called  insulin resistance ). This causes the blood sugar level to rise, making the pancreas produce even more insulin. Eventually, the pancreas can wear out from working overtime to produce extra insulin and may no longer be able to produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels normal.(Insulin is a hormone made in the body and Without insulin, glucose remains in the blood stream and cannot be used for energy by the cells.)
                        The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly common in U.S. kids and teens, especially in those who are overweight(another reason to work on your  weight loss now); including children.Some studies report that between 8% and 45% of children who've been newly diagnosed with diabetes have the form known as type 2.
The symptoms of type 2 diabetes aren't always obvious and they can take a long time to develop. Sometimes, there are no symptoms. It's important to remember that not everyone with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes develops these warning signs, and not everyone who has these symptoms necessarily has type 2 diabetes.see your doctor to be sure.

                   Doctors can determine if a person has diabetes by testing blood samples for glucose. Even if a child,teen or adult doesn't have any symptoms of type 2 diabetes, doctors may order blood tests to check those who are more likely to get it — like those who are overweight.Those with type 2 diabetes use diet, exercise, and medicines that improve the body's response to insulin to control their blood sugar levels. Some may need to take  insulin shots  or use an  insulin pump , too.

                 Most people who develop type 2 diabetes are  overweight . Excess fat makes it harder for the cells to respond to insulin. And being inactive further reduces the body's ability to respond to insulin. In the past, doctors called this type of diabetes  adult-onset diabetes  because it almost exclusively affected overweight adults. Today, that description is no longer accurate. Those with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes are also more likely to develop  hypertension  (high blood pressure) or abnormal levels of blood fats ( cholesterol  and triglycerides). When these problems cluster together, doctors call this  metabolic syndrome . People with metabolic syndrome have a greater risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and other health problems(treat your weight issue first to avoid diabetes and other health issues or before you start treating diabetes)
                 Researchers are also testing ways to stop diabetes before it starts. For example, scientists are studying whether diabetes can be prevented in those who may have inherited an increased risk for the disease
People with insulin resistance may or may not develop type 2 diabetes — it all depends on whether the pancreas can produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels normal. Repeatedly high blood sugar levels are a sign that a person has developed diabetes.

                  The cost of treating diabetes is staggering. According to the American Diabetes Association, the annual cost of diabetes in medical expenses and lost productivity rose from $98 billion in 1997 to $132 billion in 2002 to $174 billion in 2007.
                 Recently, a research on diabetes yielded a staggering result that gave the diabetics a great and lasting hope:
 The Beta glucan Lowers Blood Lipids
                BERLIN—Barley beta-glucan reduces serum lipid levels, according to research presented in february at the First International Congress on Pre-Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome.                                                                                                                                                                                            In the six-week study, 76 men and 79 women with hypercholesterolemia, aged 25 to 73, completed a four-week lowfat diet prior to baseline. At the beginning of the trial, test subjects were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups or a control group and assayed for blood lipids and other cardiovascular disease (CVD) biomarkers. During the course of the study, test groups were administered 3 g and 5 g doses of low molecular weight (LMW) or high molecular weight (HMW) barley beta-glucan (from Cargill) twice daily, in cereal and juice.

Posttreatment assessment of blood lipids and other CVD biomarkers revealed improvements in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, markers of glycemic control(glycosylated hemoglobin, HOMA model) and a key marker of inflammation

The researchers concluded both doses of LMW and HMW barley beta-glucan improved blood lipids over a six-week treatment period.
